Essential Tips for Prepping Shrubs and Trees for Winter

Winter is right around the corner, it's crucial to give your trees and shrubs the care they need to withstand the cold months ahead. Proper winter preparation ensures that your landscape’s essential plants stay healthy and ready to thrive when spring returns. At Meadowlark Landscape & Design, we know how to prepare your trees and shrubs to handle winter's challenges, so they come back stronger and more beautiful next season. Here are some expert tips to help you protect your shrubs and trees through the winter months.

Deep Watering in Late Fall

Before the ground freezes, make sure your trees and shrubs receive a deep watering, especially if you’ve had a dry fall. Watering helps plants maintain moisture throughout the winter, when they can no longer absorb water from frozen soil. Focus on the root zone, ensuring the water penetrates at least 12 inches into the soil. A well-hydrated plant will be better equipped to survive cold, dry winter winds.

Mulching for Insulation

Applying a fresh layer of mulch around the base of your trees and shrubs offers multiple benefits. Mulch acts as insulation, helping to regulate soil temperatures and retain moisture. It also protects roots from freeze-thaw cycles, which can cause damage to the plant’s root system. Spread 2-4 inches of mulch, such as wood chips or shredded bark, around the base, but leave a gap around the trunk to prevent rot.

Prune Dead or Damaged Branches

Late fall is the perfect time to prune any dead or damaged branches from your shrubs and trees. Removing these weak branches before winter storms hit reduces the risk of breakage from snow and ice accumulation. However, be careful not to over-prune, as you don’t want to stimulate new growth that could be damaged by frost.

Protect Young and Delicate Plants

For younger trees and delicate shrubs, consider using burlap or tree wraps to protect them from harsh winds, heavy snow, and ice. Wrapping the trunk or the entire plant creates a barrier against cold temperatures and prevents desiccation (drying out) caused by strong winter winds. Be sure to remove wraps in early spring to allow for proper growth and air circulation.

Fertilize in Fall

Late fall is an ideal time to fertilize your trees and shrubs. Use a slow-release fertilizer to provide essential nutrients throughout the winter months. This gives plants the energy they need to stay healthy during dormancy and promotes strong growth come spring. Deep root feeding is another option, injecting nutrients directly into the soil where they can reach the roots most effectively.
